to those wanting a Laptop with an i7 cpu, firstly make sure you pick an i7 that is Quad core not dual core (they both exist in laptops)
secondly, many i7 quad core cpu's are very low end, so if you want cpu power equal to a desktop cpu, then check this link and buy a laptop with an i7 quad core cpu that is ranked between 1 and 60, which happens to be the 2011 sandy bridge 2600 desktop cpu ranking, anything less powerful than this cpu your wasting your time, especially if your going to be using encoders that are CPU based (x264 etc) because they can put your laptop under a lot of load.

thirdly, you do not need 24gb of ram do do the type of work you want to do, just get a stock laptop with around 12gb and leave it at that, but 8gb of ram is ample as well.
comments like this one from you makes me laugh, you even make it seem like Dell computers are more prone to getting viruses than any other brand.
for every dell laptop or PC that is fixed, there are just as many other brands machines being fixed as well, and i am a certified service tech for Dell, Toshiba and Asus, so i know what i am talking about.
and seriously, you say Dell are "overpriced" ???
go take a look at the Dell website and take a look at some of the great deals they put out there, on any given day, no other OEM offers deals like Dell do, and Dell laptops i still count as being the best overall OEM laptops out there.
people buy OEM computers because generally they are reliable, and have a decent warranty, unlike some of the shonky custom built machines i have seen out there.

im not sure what laptop your going to get for between $800 and $1200 that is going to cut it as your main editing machine, but i cant think of any in that price bracket that i would even consider.
please do let us know what you finally decided to buy tho, i would be very keen to know.
if you had the cash, you cannot beat these Dell precision M6600 laptops for value, and i used to have one as a mobile editing/encoding machine and they are brilliant.

firewire was required for all cams that recorded Dv-Avi or HDV video onto a mini dv tape, and the footage from the tape had to be transferred to the hdd in real time, and firewire was the only connectivity type that was fast enough to do that, USB 2.0 was never fast enough to do it.
if you do not intend transferring any video from a mini dv camcorder to your hdd, you will not need firewire.Last edited by glenpinn; 19th Oct 2012 at 06:14.

I was never after a laptop, only desktop. I got the Dell XPS 8500 with i7 processor and 12GB or ram and 1GB video card with 23 inch LDC monitor. Bill Myers (the video guy on youtube) said this should be plenty enough to edit HD videos using Sony Vegas Pro. I figure I can always upgrade the ram later on. -
Bill Myers? Is that the guy that sang "I'm Proud To Be An Okie, From Miskokee".

This Bill Myers.
