  1. Is it possible to split an audiobook (.m4b) based on the 'chapter marks' in the file rather than on the output length or size? Both of these are options within MP4Box. In other words, split an m4b file into individual chapters based on the metadata in the m4b file.

    Thank you!

Well, since an .m4b is in actuality an .mp4 (just an extension name change, like m4a), you should be able to use Mp4box. However, unlike iTunes which allows/supports the inclusion of ALAC (and other codecs) in addition to AAC. Mp4box may only support the core MPEG codecs (mp1, mp2, mp3, aac). Then it depends on which codec(s) were used in your m4b files.

  3. Right... but how can I direct MP4Box to split according to the metadata within the mp4?

You're the one who said mp4box could do this, but I just checked the documentation, and it looks to me like MP4box can only split by length (seconds) or by size (kb).
It can ADD chapter marks, just not split by them.

You may want to check out mp3directcut. I can operate on AAC as well as MP3, and it does split by chapter marks, IIRC.
