I am capturing from an s-video source with digital VCR in my AIW 7500.

I want to capture in .avi, but don't know what the proper settings should be to edit with Vdub and re-encode to MPEG2 later.

The source is 4:3 NTSC, and I want to be able to capture at no more than 20 MB per second, with quality as good or better than capturing with MPEG2. (the reason I want to cap to .avi is because it is easier to edit with vdub)

  2. Best is to cap with HuffYUV, but needs a lot of speed and space. Next best is MJPEG..the higher the compression, the worse the immagequality.

Next is capture in MPEG directly, but MPEG editing is not a smart thing to do. For best final product use huffyuv.

  3. I use my AIW Radeon to capture 480x480 NTSC in DIVX 5.0 format, then convert to either VCD or SVCD. I have used Huffy, MJPEG and DIVX and have found that if you tweak DIVX 5.0 a little, you can very easily edit the files in Vdub and convert.

I set my DIVX to NO MORE THAN 30 frames between keyframes (15 frames is my average). This way, when you do cuts in Vdub, they will not land very far from the keyframe and will be pretty darn accurate. Huffy uses all keyframes, so for absolute frame accuracy, it's a good choice. I also found that using 1-pass quality based with the slider at 100% does a very nice job.

This works for me, and very well. I have 180 gigs of hard drive, but this way I can capture what I want, then convert whenever I have the time.

how do you capture HuffYUV with an AIW7500? I want to use my AIW s-video input, but I guess I could use some other software for capture.

  5. I've had an AIW 128 once and used VDUB...worked for me..not sure why it shouldn't work for ANY capturecard except from the harware mpeg ones.

So capture in VDUB...use any codec needed to provide the speedlimit your have. HUFFYUV has a 2:1 compression so it depends on the resolution set what datarate you will generate to your hdd. Just try and see howmany dropped frames you get. Use MJPEG high Q setting if the HDD is too slow or too small.

afterwards edit en convert to MPEG-2 with CCE or TMPGenc.

    Burn with NERO.

  6. It is possible to edit captured ATI MPG2 ( I use this for limited HD space and no dropped frames). Try this - cap 720x480, cropped, 12,000 bitrate, CBR, I-frame only. 10-12 gig per 90 minutes. Then demux video with TMPgenc, strip wav with FLASK, DVD2avi for project file, open D2V with Avisynth, resize, IVTC, add borders, open AVS file in VDUB with wave, edit as needed, and frameserve.

Works great for cutting out commercials, no synch issues, quality comparable to AVI capture, hi-res and no dropped frames in less HD space. I can cap 4-5 movies on a 60 gig drive. Plus you have the MMC scheduling features.

Couldn't agree with you more!! AIW MPEG2 I-Frame only is the best analogue capturing solution for me. I then use Xmpeg to go to Divx 5.02 or the Ligos plugin w/ Xmpeg to go to SVCD. Quick easy and the results are great for the time invested.
