  1. How long should smartripper take to rip a dvd (The spy who Sha**ed) me?

Im using a 2000xp athlon and pioneer 104 dvd reader/writer.

Its been going for about 10 hours and is only 40% done, is that right?

    Should not take that long.

Are you unlocking the drive by playing the actual movie for a couple of minutes before starting smart-ripper ?

Ripping a movie with a different region to that of you're dvd-rom can cause problems. Try DvdDecrypter or Dvd2Svcd.

You could unlock the drive by playing another DVD first, ie one for the correct region which you are in (I assume you use region 1 ?), then quit the player program.
    Swap disk's then start smartripper.
Not sure if it'll make any difference, but it could be worth a try.
Also, have you installed the Adaptec ASPI layer ?, This made a difference on my system.

  7. I only got the dvd writer yesterday so nothing has been played on it yet, if i try to play a dvd it asks me to set the region (Im region 2). If i do that will i only be able to rip region 2 dvd's.

I dont need the dvd for watching purposes.

What OS are you using? Windows XP can switch off DMA on Atapi drives if if gets minor read errors. This can reduce the read rate drastically.

If you try DvdDecrypter with a disc of a different region it will warn you and use a different rip method.

    Worth a try.
