Why do some DVD drives need authenticated and some dont?

I was wondering why some DVD drives need to be authenticated before ripping, and some do not. For example, when I use my Raite DVD drive, I do not have to do anything first to authenticate it (I use DVD2SVCD and SmartRipper). My friend has the same drive, and again needed no authentication. He just bought a new LiteOn DVD drive, and on this one he cannot rip at all until he authenticates it first (I suggested he play a few seconds with PowerDVD, which seems to work). He said he likes the speed of the new drive, but having to play it first is annoying.

Can someone tell me why this is only needed on certain drives, and is there an easier way to do this? We are both running WindowsXP.

get the force aspi drivers from www.doom9.net this will sort out the problem!!! its just with win2000 & xp some drives have bother!!

OK thanks, I'll suggest that to my friend. Although he swears he had the latest ASPI installed (XP), and didn't have this problem with his original DVD drive. I believe he got the latest aspi from Adaptec, so you are saying the one at doom9 is more reliable, correct?

it does not really matter about the aspi drivers as such coz mine had the latest ones also & it still would not authenticate.. A friend told me to do this & hey presto it worked!! so lets hope it does the same for your friend also.

Smartripper always required me to play the dvd before I could rip. I have used dvd decrypter for 6 months and it never has this problem, just put it in and let er rip.
