Bit Rates etc....

Hi All,

Just a quick newbie question, I have only a little experience with authoring DVD's , and am trying to learn more, I use AVS Video Editor and also various Moyea software all of which I find easy and intuitive.

I am preparing a DVD for my 6yr old son , a compilation of car chases and things of this nature from my DVD collection, I uses AVS video convertor to rip the particular scene and convert it to MPEG2 format at a bit rate of 4000 is this a good choice of format for quality? ... (as an experiment I compared two exact movie action scenes on my 42" plasma , one at 4000 and one at 8000 , I could not see any noticeable difference), so Rip at the 4000, I then author/EDit all the clips together with AVS video editor and burn after.

most of the DVD's I am ripping when I click advanced and look at properties the bit rates go between 7500 and 9800 KBs,

My question is this when I look at a VEVO video on youtube the bitrate is Tiny maybe 350?, but a 4min video is about 25MB, how come these videos are of such high quality?

I am aware of course that the "source" is extremely high quality even the best, but if someone could explain the bit rate part , I would be grateful.

Youtube uses mpeg4 h264/avc or vp8 video codecs and they compress much better but still with very god quality compared to the older mpeg2 video codec that dvd use.

Why convert them at all since they're already in DVD compliant format (right?). Just use them as-is. Cut the pieces from the DVDs using DVDShrink and then reauthor using DVDShrink.

I agree. The only reason to recompress with a lower bitrate is to put more on a DVD.

hey i use avs video editor and have problems with it lagging and freezing when i try to edit over 2 GB files, and i have a dual-core like you do but only 1 GB RAM.. does your program run smooth?

1GB is kinda on the bottom of the range.......I have never had any problems authoring up to 7GB as I have Dual layer burner also. do you have the latest version of Video editor it should be 6.03.184?

No, i have 5.1.2.131. Im going to update it but i have seen the latest version on my laptop and looks the same although i dont know the specific differences
