Hi guys, could you please show me how to rip movie DVDs into small mkv files and still be able to keep the sub, audios and good video quality like the one people are sharing on the web? I want the resulf is in .mkv but have no idea what codecs or any setting should I choose, so please suggest me some popular programs, codecs or tricks/tips in ripping, thank you very very much.

Thanks Baldrick for the suggestion, I will try that out but do you have any advice about which codec should I use?
I've seen x264 and h264 a lot, so what are they and which one is more popular?
My BD player can play mkv but I haven't seen any of my mkv files recognized by it, so what do they mean by "MKV," what exactly we need to have inside those MKVs?
I really what to know what codecs or formats that are supported by most current DVD/BD players and what other programs like HandBrake that can help me get it? Thanks,

H264 is the codec, x264 is an encoder that encodes to the H264 format.

Personally I prefer XmediaRecode over Handbrake. However in either case I wouldn't bother squeezing it down to 700MB unless you don't care about quality

Thanks guns1inger, I do care about quality but the reason why I want to do that I've seen many movies that my friends downloaded from the Internet, they're all full movie and the quality looks just like DVD when played on TV through usb port, but the size is only ~700MB to 1GB, compares to 7GB to 8GB on a retail DVD. One of my friends suggested me Megui so does anyone has any idea about this? Is it good at encoding or converting movie like that? Thanks,

I extract this vob out from an original retail DVD using DVD Shrink but the quality doesn't look quite good (there are lines when things move fast), can anyone encode it to a better mkv using HandBrake or anything else? Thanks,

Also, if you must use Shrink, make sure it is set to 'No Compression', or you take an extra quality hit before you even start your massive crush encode.

I did leave the No Compression enabled but what is ICTV and how do I do that in HandBrake or any other programs?

The file above has only 30s with 15MB, so please have a look and help me how to make it look better, thanks.

  12. IVTC = inverse telecine

I think in handbrake it's called "detelecine"

If you don't know how to IVTC or use filters and scripts, try something like megui, xvid4psp , staxrip or ripbot . They will attempt to detect the source and apply the right settings (they don't always get it right, you have to do it manually to do a better job)

Getting higher quality from a dvd source usually means other pre processing filters are involved. You can't just encode it and expect great quality. This is a big topic use search

  13. You can also do it with BDRB. In "Settings", check IVTC. In "Mode", select "Alternate Movie Output", then MKV at standard resolution (720x480/576), and set your target size.

[EDIT] Sorry, didn't register that the source is DVD. Use Handbrake or RipBot then.

i'm guessing you're using a really crappy tv, or perhaps all the weed has caused a serious cataract problem, if you can look at a professionally produced commercial dvd at 7-8 gigs and a half assed re-encode done by some script kiddie at 700 mb and they look the same to you.

@deadrats: Maybe so 'cause I really can't see any difference. ^^
@poisondeathray: Thanks for the info, I found that option and would try soon. : )
@everybody: Where should I start to learn about video world so that I can know how to adjust those things like ictv?

Right now I just load the movie into HandBrake as Baldrick suggested and let it do the job automatically (without changing anything from the presets because I really don't know how), and the result are not so bad. But, yesterday I noticed one thing weird that the result size for 2012 is 1.03GB (2h37m) and for Transformer 2 the size is 2.33GB (2h29m), so does anyone know why?
