HR-DVS1U - Mini DV Deck: No audio, analog output Static

Hey everyone. Today I received an HR-DVS1U S-VHS/DV dual deck from eBay.

The MiniDV deck doesn't seem to output any audio from the analog outputs or when connected to my PC via Firewire. Also, on the composite video output the picture turns to Static after several seconds (I've never seen a digital source produce static like this before):

Has anyone had this issue before? I can return it, but I'll eat the shipping costs, so I was hoping someone might have a suggestion. I'll pop the top off after work (tested this quick over lunch) and see if all connections look okay or if the head looks particularly dirty.

The S-VHS side of the deck works fine. And yes, I know THIS is exactly why people discourage buying COMBO decks

video off sync? I also had those on composite, i tried to put i think 75 ohms terminator at the back of deck, it works well, im told that the sync loops, so sometimes you have to terminate it by closing one of it with terminators.
