this isn't necessarily a DVD Ripping Question, i just figured i'd get the best response from fellow rippers. feel free to move this as necessary.
so i've noticed that some DVD-R brands (mostly Maxell and Memorex), over the past couple years, have started putting "RW" on the packaging and discs as well, and as i have not yet seen a thread about this, thought i would inquire into the community. what i'm talking about is this:
http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00PeBtqMHcElbK/Blank-DVD-R-R-AKIRA-4-7GB-16X-120MIN.jpg
notice how, directly over the DVD+R it says RW. i have yet to hear this talked about, and am not sure if this is some sort of specification or something, or what it is called, but it is appearing on many discs in all brands:

on the disc, partially covered by the hub's centerpiece:

and EVEN ON VERBATIM DISCS!:

can somebody please tell me what this means, and why it only appears on DVD discs, and primarily on DVD+R or DVD-R, and less frequently on the DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs?
i just know i am totally going to feel retarded when i find out it's something simple, it just bugs me, and i get people calling me all the time saying "My RW disc won't erase!" when it's NOT a DVD-RW disc, just a DVD-R with the letters RW promionently displayed, and it just stresses me out trying to explain it when even i don't fully understand it!
sorry, done ranting now...

But it shouldn't be on any DVD-Rs though. -
For those not interested in following the link, it's the logo of the DVD+RW alliance. It should only appear on + media as Baldrick says. It has confused many consumers. As far as I can tell in the past it was displayed in very small letters and it's only been a recent decision to display it in large letters and thus confuse many people.

Take another look at all your labels I'm almost sure one of them says "Write Once" on one of the labels, if it does not it is understood it can only write once, with write once you can not erase.
-
Perhaps I am having a blonde moment but I could not see any dvd -R disks in the links you posted ?????????
-
-
yeah, as Baldrick noted, the DAEWOO discs had them too, but maybe they were just as confused as i was
so yeah, THAT'S MADNESS! but yeah, it makes more sense now. they should've picked another Logo, i think, or at least opted out of having it posted on the discs.
...so then, what was the "Alliance" for CD-Rs called, or was there one?darkflux -
While we're at it, WTF does the "RW" stand for then? I Googled it and couldn't find any explanation.
Surely not "Read-Write? -
heh, good question AlanHK. even their website doesn't mention anything of it:
http://www.dvdservices.org
the Wikipedia pages don't either, and don't even have the logos!:

...does anyone else find it interesting that these two groups' founding members are a lot of the same companies? kinda like CocaCola and Pepsi, right?
"Coke sucks! Drink Pepsi!"
"No, Pepsi sucks! Drink Coke!"
<in unison>:"But as long as you're drinking cola instead of water that's good for you, we're all happy aren't we?" ~ Doug Stanhope

Maybe we should run a comp for the most apt name ?
How about 'Rival Works' for a start.
Well atleast we know what VHS stood for - Very High Standard -
The DVD forum site has a section that states:
DVD-RW
Similar to DVD-RAM except that its technology features a sequential read-write access more like a phonograph than a hard disk. Its read-write capacity is 4.7 Gbytes per side. It can be re-written up to about 1,000 times.

RW = ReWritable
I know...not the most intuative answer, but a logical carryover from CDRWs which are also ReWritable
Here's a link to a white paper from the DVD Alliiance site. Note the logo on the top left of the first page.

The abbreviation "RW" always stands for "rewritable" when referring to optical media formats.
Apparently, one of the goals for the DVD+RW Alliance, which was resonsible for developing all the "plus" formats, was to create a new kind of rewritable media. Once they decided on using "RW" in the name for the group, it isn't hard to understand how they might pick "RW" for their logo, although they apparently didn't think about the confusion that might cause for the public.Last edited by usually_quiet; 12th Feb 2011 at 11:12.

If it is on a -R or +R (i.e without the W) then it obviously stands for 'Rite Wonce' (just say it after a hot curry or with a mouthful of rice)
