  1. If a hard drive is hooked up to a media player like the WD LIve, and my TV is NTSC does it convert PAL DVD files on the Hard drive to NTSC? I do not think this is a problem with divx/mkv type files but if it does not then presumable the hardd rive needs to go through a usb socket on a dvd player like th Philips 5990.

    many thanks

One of the few draw backs with the WDTV is that you have to choose an output format, and all source is converted to that format. It would have been nice if there was a third option - auto - which output the same format as the source, so that those of us with multi-format displays didn't have to convert during playback (or change output formats depending on what we were watching).

You have a point, but I suspect this is because of what I like to call "the dumbass factor". Many North Americans do not have such TVs. For example, I have a Samsung HDTV which is a really good HDTV, but it doesn't support PAL at all. The docs say so and I've tried tests and I can confirm that it does not support PAL. Others have posted here saying the same. Anyway, if the WDTV supported AUTO, can you imagine how many calls and angry emails they would get from dumbass American users saying "Your crap is broke" when their TV couldn't display a PAL signal off some video they downloaded. I doubt that even 5% of the public in the USA and Canada can even tell you what NTSC and PAL are.
