Most of the time I re-encode HD TV recordings to SD DVD and author a disc if I want to save them. Often this is for family members who have missed a favorite show and want to watch my recordings to catch up. Since they only have a DVD player available to them, a DVD is the most convenient solution.

Here's my breakdown:
75% sd-dvd
18% avchd
remaining to just video files.
I have a hauppauge hd pvr so I can do a lot of stuff in hd. But I also prefer dvd for flexibility since I only have a ps3 and a pc bluray player (both are on the same hdtv so I can only bluray/avchd in one room). So I tend to convert to dvd more often than not so I can play it in other rooms.
BUT depending on what it is I'll keep a avchd backup or m2ts file backup to preserve hd even if I may watch it on sd-dvd more frequently - if it was originally hd.
Part of it is to I have done at least two dozen vhs caps in the last three months are so and all were destined for sd-dvd. No need to go high def from a vhs source - plain old sd-dvd full screen 98% of the time. I did have one widescreen vhs tape that turned out great and I have another to capture but haven't gotten to yet. The help I got here to take the widescreen vhs and make a 16:9 dvd with avstodvd was phenomenal. I'll use the same approach with this other tape once I do capture it.Donatello - The Shredder? I'm all over the map.
Most of my stuff goes to streaming formats now.

Mostly h.264/AC3 in MKV, occasionally Xvid/MP3 AVI. Hardly ever burn DVDs anymore.

Well I predominately use my tivo to stream video from my pc but when I do author dvd's I choose sd-dvd. Eventually I'll upgrade to blu-ray but that won't happen until I get an HD TV... which I don't have any disposable cash available to get one any time soon.
