    a) You will lose quality. How much is up for debate, but accept now that you will lose quality.

    b) AVI is a container format. In it you put video and audio. What type of video and audio is determined by the codecs used - e.g. Xvid/MP3 or DV/PCM. You need to start by telling us what sort of codecs your TV will play, and what limitations you need to observe - eg. resolutions, bitrates etc. All of this should be in the TV manual.

My strong suggestion - go and buy yourself a decent media player like a WDTV or similar, and put your mkv files on a portable HDD. Your TV's capabilities are on par with a standalone DVD player of 4 years ago. You cannot convert to a format it will play without losing a large % of your quality.

If your DVD player will support AVCHD authored discs then you can use MultiAVCHD to convert them to a suitable structure, then burn them to DVD blanks using imgburn. It will take around 4 - 6 hours per movie, depending on your CPU. Note : this will not play on a standard DVD player, only on a PS3 or suitable Bluray player (not all support AVCHD).

  6. Your TV is limited to standard definition videos, either MPEG 1/2 or Divx/Xvid AVI. Converting your HD MKV/MP4 files will be time consuming and you will lose a lot of quality.

WDTV refers to the Western Digital WD TV series:

They will probably play your files directly off your network, a USB hard drive, or USB thumb drive.

The WDTV has pretty flexible zoom functions, so you can zoom in to fill the screen (if that is your wish) or zoom out to expose areas usually hidden by overscan

It supports subs in mkv files as well as external subs in a number of formats (SRT, ASS, SSA, SUB, SMI ) however I don't know what languages it supports. You can download a copy of the manual here and find out if you are interested.

  11. Note there are many other players with similar features and prices. Seagate FreeAgent Theater+, PopBox (still pretty buggy from what I hear), Boxee Box (to be released later this year), Tvix, Netgear, D-Link, etc.

so what is the best one in your opinion i already asked about the price here in Egypt for the wdtv and it is around 700 L.E ,so i don't think it wont be more expensive for other players but i'm asking about performance so which one do you recommend for me??

  13. I can't really say what's best. I don't have any direct experience with any except the WDTV Live -- and am satisfied with that. It plays most files including MKV, MP4, MPG, TS, M2TS, Divx/AVI, etc. It can handle 1080p60 h.264 and everthing lower. It has good connectivity: HDMI, component, composite, optical SPDIF, RCA stereo.

It does have a few shortcomings. It stutters on some h.264 MP4 files. It has trouble playing the highest bitrate (50000+ kbps) h.264 video. It can't do DVD menus -- although a new firmware that can is in beta testing right now. Its deinterlacing isn't the greatest (looks like a simple bob) but you probably won't need that much. No DV AVI playback (I haven't heard of any standalone that can play DV AVI). It can't decode DTS-HD audio.

The latest (beta) firmware seems to fix the mp4 playback issues (at least it has on mine). I haven't tested DVD ISO playback as I find it a very inefficient storage method.

  15. I'm still running firmware revision 1.02.21 (the latest non-beta update) which has problems with some MP4 files. The lack of menu support isn't a big deal to me. But it is a problem for people with ISO or VIDEO_TS rips of TV series. You can't select which episode to watch (the older firmware simply plays the longest title).

  19. Leave the Video section set to Copy. Select an audio codec and parameters in the audio section. Pick an output container in the Format section. Save...

thanks for the tip..this is working now, but pretty slow. I need to wait for the complete movie to get over to convert one audio to another without touching the video part ! the same kinda thing can be achieved in mkvtoolnix within couple of mins. Is there any such option in avidemux to convert faster ?

mkvtoolnix doesn't change the audio - no conversion of any kind, just repackaging.

Some of the codecs are faster than others. For example, the MP2 (lav) encoder is several times faster than the MP3 (lame) encoder.

  28. I can't help you because:

    A) I don't use My Mp4Box GUI .
