My local Sam's is no longer carrying Verbatim brand blank disks. They now stock only Memorex. Now that's a step backward.

I think that's the case at all Sam's.

Yeah, Verbatim in retail isn't a good situation lately.
See also Verbatims DVD-R on sale have changed to CMC!

They were always a better price at Amazon anyway.
    Check out http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2F...reative=390957
    Right now DVD-R is $24, DVD+R $23 - no tax, free shipping.
The ones at Amazon are still the good discs, as far as I know. My last shipment was fine.

Not to mislead anyone, but the free shipping at Amazon is for orders of $25 or more -- neither of these would qualify (buy 2 ).

I don't trust that Newegg won't just start sending Value or Life Series when they run out of the older ones.
They've done stuff like that before.

I'm really pissed about this. They went from the best MCC Verbatims to the worst Indian Moser Baer Memorexes. This is unacceptable to me. And now that they no longer have the unlimited return policy on electronics, and they don't even offer an extended warranty like Costco does, unless you pay extra for some absolutely worthless extended membership that gives you coupons on crap you don't want, I have no reason to renew my membership when it expires. I bought these disks and, when I got home, I immediately checked the manufacturer using Plextor PlexTools Professional. Unfortunately I found out the bad news:

    HTML Code:
    Type : DVD+R DL
    BookType : DVD+R DL
    Label : -
    Capacity (Sectors) : -
    Capacity (MB) : -
    Application : -
    Publisher : -
    Contents:
    blank disc inserted (7.96 GB)
    Certified Write Speed: 2.4 X - 4.0 X - 8.0 X
    Drive Write Speed : 2.4 X
    Manufacturer ID : MBIPG101
    Media ID : R10
    Product Revision : 65
This is what digitalFAQ.com Blank DVD Media Quality Guide has to say about these:

2nd Class Media (Okay or Passable Discs):
Mixed quality media, average 75-90% of discs tend to be good. These discs are not suggested for archival data or video masters. These are best suited for data that can be replaced easily, such as secondary backups or data/video distribution. In bulk, can often be purchased at low prices.
    Moser Baer MBI, MBIPG101R03, MBIPG101R04, MBIPG101W03, MBIPG101W04, MBI01RG20, MBI03RG40
    India DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW
poor firmware support, some of the discs are similar to MCC
    Later, Sams Club . . .

I recognize that to a certain extent this is just passing on information to report that about Sam's Club. Still, if you are one of those "Can... only...buy...discs...in...Sam's...Club...unable... to...buy...online" people, I have no sympathy at all for the corner you have painted yourself into.

Aside from the fact that your comment is rude, arrogant, shallow, and counterproductive, just for the record, I am warning people about those disks at Sams Club so they can avoid them. I can just return them any way so no big deal. As for your amazingly clever remark about "painting myself into a corner" and your mock sympathy, my little troll, just FYI, until the recent change, Sams Club had the best buy on the best quality MCC Verbatims. That's all. Now go play WOW on mummy's 'puter. Later . .

jman98's comments are obviously aimed at the ridiculous "fear of online buying" crowd.
I happen to agree with him on that.

When the stores fail to provide quality products (or reasonable prices), by all means, buy online.

  16. lordsmurf, re-read jman98's comments.

jman98 often provides excellent information, insights, and recommendations. However, he is just as likely to be purposely insulting to those he deems lesser mortals. His track record on this is available for all to see.

Who cares if he has "no sympathy?" And who are any of us to decide when someone's actions are ridiculous, just because we don't agree?

Why so d*mn judgmental? To what possible positive purpose or outcome?

Well, my response to such things is usually to educate. That's a good neutral position to take, and it's a positive one. In this case, people really need to learn that the Internet bogeyman isn't going to eat their credit cards, and suddenly be used to buy new cars that are shipped to Russia. That's ridiculous, but it's a common thought.

As a society, we have a duty to halt stupidity when we see it. Whether it's the "government planned 9/11" nuts, the "moon landing shot in a sound studio" idiots, or the "Internet is unsafe for buying" crowd -- all of them need to be corrected, and their message needs to be contained. If we ignore that, we allow the message to spread, and are therefore guilty ourselves. Judgmental? Maybe. But we have to be.

Again, I choose to fight it off via education.

  18. As to having a self-appointed "duty to halt stupidity when we see it," that presumes the self-appointee is right and is able to recognize stupidity. (The learned used to think the earth was the center of the universe, that "bleeding" a patient was state-of-the-art medicine, etc., etc., ad nauseum.)

As they sang in "Porgy and Bess," "It ain't necessarily so."

I submit, LS, that if you want to educate someone as to something about which you might even be 100% correct, calling them "an idiot" or "a nut" first won't get you far . . . . . Too often, it just leads to flamewars.

  19. Personally, I wonder if there is any price difference to the stores purchasing this new media from Verbatim versus the older better media. If it is cheaper and the stores aren't discounting the price then they make more profit. If the stores are paying the same price and selling it at the same price then they may see a downturn in sales. Of course the downturn will only be for those who really understand the situation. One would think that all the stores selling Memorex blanks would never sell anything and yet they do. People get what they pay for and it's up to the consumer to educate themselves about the product they purchase.

My local Best Buy now only stocks the "Life Series" single layer Verbatim discs but still carries the MIS Verbatim DLs. The price markup is insane, however, so I have absolutely no reason to purchase blank media from Best Buy. NewEgg & Meritline have all that I need at far better prices even when including shipping and tax but I generally wait for sales where free shipping is included. I grabbed a 60-pack of MIS Verbatim DL from Meritline for $61.98 total back on the 4th of this month. $59.99 for the blanks and $1.99 for shipping.
