Gents:
I love the accurate scene detection & automatic splitting capabilites that HDV Split offers as it saves me alot of time slicing and dicing once a tape is imported into the PC.
Is there a capture program SD/NTSC 480p-wise that can do the same thing or close to it?
I also film in SD so a program such as this would be very helpful.
Thanks!

DV format is 480i or 576i (PAL). Are you talking about 24PF or 24PA modes as 480p? These modes use telecine fields to pad out to 480i.
Regardless, WinDV is the rough equivalent to HDVSplit for DV format but it lacks tape transport control other than pre-roll. With WinDV you manually cue the tape and manually stop the capture. For long captures you can specify capture length by frame count in Config.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

Yes edDv,
I meant 30p for my canon GL-2.
Manually stopping the tape for each scene change ( i.e for an audience close-up) is not attractive if I understood you correctly.
What I like about HDV Split is that you start the thing, wait while it rolls through the tape and it automatically chops up the incoming footage from tape appropriately in to editable clips.
I'm surprised something like this doesn't have more choices given SD's age. -
30p is the same thing as 480i as far as the tape is concerned. In the case of 480i, fields are sampled at 59.94 rate (twice the motion samples). For "30p" both fields are sampled from the same frame at 29.97 fps rate. That is why 30p looks somewhat stepped in motion when watching on a large HDTV.
WinDV can be set to split on time code discontinuities same as HDVSplit. The frames are split where you stop and start the camcorder. In config, set Discontinuity to 1.
The tape and capture program see no difference between 480i/29.97 and 480p/29.97. You need to tell the editor the material is 29.97p if you are editing progressive. Otherwise it will try to deinterlace it.Last edited by edDV; 25th Aug 2010 at 13:32.
