    Morning thenetstricker,

the problem might be because you're a newbie at this, and you're expecting
too much too soon, vs. whatever you might have seen on the internet via
    D/L vs. your experience or non-experience w/ DV-to-VCD/SVCD/DVD.

Depending on your location, PAL vs. NTSC, the later will give you the worst
quality due to higher framerate vs. PAL's 25fps. NTSC is 29.970, and quite
    interlaced.

Judging by your initial post, you may be seeing those interlace lines, which
by the way, add to even worse quality. Depending on what (since you left other
details out) you may have to deinterlace your DV avi during the encoding
process - look to your left for instruction, ie, read the F.A.Q. and scan/search
    for "interlace".

In short, you may be encoding encorectly, ie, have the interlace turned on, ect.
I won't go into details here as the LINKs to your left go into this, also searching
on this FORUM will come up with PLENTY of instructions or posts on this matter.
It's a lot of reading, but worth it IF you REALLY want to get into it, else I don't
give out quicky answers anymore as I used to, but maybe someone else will here.
    Good luck.

  3. I've now allready found the problem. It wasent the interlace. It was really the programm that made this fault. My trick that I use now is first to capture and cut the DV Video in Premiere. But for the conversion I now use Discreet Cleaner 5.This programm converts the movie perfect. So i get a sharp and good picture in the mpeg file.

  4. You should see no interlace lines when converting to VCD.

Did you try using TMPGEnc? I use that (and about a million others) for their DV conversion and they come out great. It has a template for VCD, load it up, set motion search to Highest Quality and encode away. The files will look great on the computer, but look just ok when played on the TV. That is just how VCD is.
