  1. If the source is 1080p bluray shouldn't the encode always be 1920 horizontally? I've seen encodes with 1916x and 1904x. I've even seen an extreme case with 1752x1080 which is 1.62:1, the OAR for that movie is actually 1.85:1, so it should actually be 1920x1037.

  2. You didn't see those sizes on a Blu-ray disc. People often remove black borders when ripping/converting. And some people just have no idea what they're doing.

No of couse I haven't, I wrote about encodes.
I'm talking about horizontal resolution. It should always be 1920, even if you remove black bars from the encode.

I don't see how that follows. It can be whatever you make it when resizing. For example, for compression purposes, after removing black bars someone might resize to 1280 by xxx.

    Hardly.

  6. Yeah, ok. I probably should've added a question mark and "shouldn't" as I know nothing about encoding.
But why would you not keep 1920x and just remove the black bars when encoding?

I checked my other MKV 1080p encodes and they are all 1920 width and OAR (black bars stripped). It seems it's only the internal group CHD that's doing this sometimes.

do you fail to understand? Since you're new I'll warn you - if you decide to go down the path of dubmassery and say, yet again, the exact same question of why do people do this, I am not in any way responsible for the unkind replies you deservedly will get. Personally speaking, if you ask it again, my preference would be to mark you off as a complete idiot and not respond.

One other stupid reason that stupid people might have for doing this is that if they reduce the resolution they can get the same quality as at a higher resolution and a higher bit rate, but whether it's really worth encoding such slightly reduced resolutions to save few bits is something else entirely. Again, I lean towards jagabo's succinct answer above.
