i have been trying to setup my HTPC. So far i have been able to play all the mkvs with HW acceleration using 8600GTS.
Just recently got a MKV from a friend. It's audio1 is russian (Not sure if that helps determine the problem).
The mkv loads correctly but doesn't show video. Can hear the Audio though. I see the HW acceleration is working fine (CPU is just about 8%). If i Forward to someother time, then i see only one image and then it just stops.

I compared with other playing MKVs and see the not working one his 1280x688 is recorded at 23.8fpsor something where as others are 1920x1080 or 1280x544 or something.

    i am using MPC-HC.
Tried CoreAVC and was able to see Video correctly but it was not able to get the HW acceleration with the MKV so movie played really slow.
Tried installing Haali and got the same results (Slow playback) with MPC Decoder (MPC-HC internal).

Let me know if you need any more specifics, but any help would be greatly appreciated....

  2. Video is probably not DXVA compliant. eg. too many reference frames, too many b-frames, b-pyramid etc....

You can use mediainfo (view=>text) for more information

And if you would like it dxva compliant you can reconvert it using for example Handbrake, uncropMKV, etc.

But try also play with VLC or SMPlayer and see how it handles it.
