AverTV Studio does a pretty good job at capturing VHS tapes to VCD. It has WDM drivers which allow you change the bitrate that you capture at as well. When going from VHS to VCD (320 x 240 mpeg1 bitrate~1100), it preserves quality pretty well. The card has composite as well as s-video input jacks so you can choose either to use. I prefer to use s-video to hook my super vhs vcr up. I must warn you though that this card has trouble capturing at vertical resolutions greater than 240 lines so don't plan you using it for SVCD or full DVD quality which require 480 verical lines. The card's pluses include a remote control, FM radio listening and recording, program scheduler, and real time mpeg encoding which saves hours at the expense of some loss of quality. I initially brought the card to save time putting minidv tapes on recordable DVDs at 720 x 480 in mpeg2, but was shocked to find out that I could not do it with this card. Do some research, search this forum, and make a wise decision when you buy.
Addendum: Card now captures at 480 after downloading new drivers and application from avermedia and making sure full size capture box was checked. Now I am burning SVCDs and DVDs. -
I have the avermedia TV98 without the fm radio. I have a p4 1.6 and can capture what I want. The card was designed to capture avi as it appears from the driver settings. You can fool it a bit by telling it you are capturing a japanese signal or something like that (driver source option) and it opens up (PAL) options other than NTSC 640x480,320x240 and 160x120. When I capture 640x480 or greater, I have to use preview mode, not overlay, otherwise there is an err msg. I have captured at other resolutions with no problems using apps that don't depend on the driver supplied by avermedia. One good example is virtualdub and its custom settings. This card accepts all sizes and more important for vcd creation you can capture to yuy2 format avi right away. I wouln't spend my money on a hardware mpeg card when I already have paid for the hardware on my system. I let it do the work and perform software mpeg capture/conversion instead.
I have used it with nanodvr, winvcr and powervcr I and II which are all realtime mpeg capture apps. With powervcr II you can capture at 720x480 or 704x480 or any other size you want at mpeg2 or mpeg1. I have no problems recommending this card. If your system has the horsepower and you use the right app, you can do just about anything.
I used to capture straight avi Yu12 full frame 29.97 with my 200mmx and my K6 233mmx.
