Will 33,728,752,028 bytes fit on this 32GB flash drive?

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220261

Google says 32GB is 34,359,738,368 bytes but I don't know if Patriot is using the same calculation...

It's impossible to say without testing. Here's why.

It goes back to the old "What is a gigabyte?" question. Computer memory is measured in powers of 2 because it's all binary. So by powers of 2, 1 GB is actually 1073741824 bytes. This is what Google is using to calculate. However, some manufactures use this term (incorrectly) to mean
1000000000 bytes, which gives you 32000000000 - less than what you need.
Further, it's also possible that 32GB could be in powers of 2, but somewhat less than 32000000000 or barely above it and just rounded to 32 GB. Add to this that formatting the drive will take away some portion of it for file system overhead and essentially you have the computer equivalent of having a truck approach an underpass with a sign that says "Clearance 10 feet". You think that your truck is exactly 10 feet from bottom to top, but do you chance it? Suppose your truck really is 10 feet from bottom to top but the bridge makers were barely off and the actual clearance is 9 feet 11.95 inches. You won't go through. So will it fit? I have no idea because I have no idea how much memory is really and truly meant by 32 GB and how much you will lose to formatting overhead.

The only way you can be 100% sure it will fit is to buy a 64 GB flash drive.

I'll just give Patriot a call on Monday to ask how much space a formatted 32GB drive has. I just need this little drive as a backup, the data on it won't ever change...

  4. If I had to bet, I would say no. An external HD might be a better bet.

Windows will tell you what real volume is,just right click on the usb icon in my computer and select properties,it will show you this- capacity 29,800,000,000 bytes 32gb or
    capacity 34,359,738,368 bytes 34gb

If its the first one then you cant fit it,if its the second one then you can.
Most likely its the first capacity cause all hdd and usb give the 1.024 version cause it looks bigger.

  8. To a drive manufacturer 32 GB usually means 32,000,000,000 bytes (32 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000), not 34,359,738,368 bytes (32 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024).

I have an 8 GB thumb drive and Windows says it's 8,103,460,864 bytes, 7.54 GB.
