I assume you are talking about loading on an iPod? I'm not into that stuff but the short answer re avi is no. You will have to convert one way or another. Here's an excerpt from iPod Classic brochure:

H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.

There are plenty of apps for converting, just Google "avi to iPod". I've no idea on speeds, more likely to depend on pc performance than app.

My mistake, on re-reading it looks like you are just trying to catalog the files on your pc using iTunes. Can't help there. Can't you just try it and see?

iTunes, like most Apple product, works within very narrow parameters. Basically, if you don't fit it's very narrow view of the world, you will have to change, because it sure as hell won't.

Find a more appropriate tool, or be prepared to convert everything to meet iTunes rather narrow and mediocre requirements.

(disclaimer - I have an iPod classic, and I use iTunes - grudgingly - but only for managing the iPod)

I have used Ipodifier to convert all my TV Ep discs and set-up correctly, does a wonderful job.

It is designed to integrate with capturing software so that you can capture a show, encode and add it to your ipod all unattended.
    If in doubt, Google it.
