    Hello,

I have just purchased a Vado HD camera which records in H.264 AVI.

My laptop is too slow to play/edit this format. It plays but audio is out
    of sync.

I want to convert with the best quality possible to the standard DV AVI format
so I can edit in sony movie studio 9 (not hd version).

I also want to keep the letterbox/wides screen format.

I have tried SUPER and it does do the conversion but only offers 5:4 ratio
which I do not want. (unless I am missing something, which is very possible)

anyone got any ideas of a preferably free tool to do this with? I will pay for
the software if need be, i just want something to work.

Convert to 720x480 dv-avi and ignore any ratio and then adjust the aspect ratio/black borders in vegas movie studio.

YOu can also try xvid4psp and mpeg streamclip to convert to dv-avi ntsc. Maybe even windows movie maker will work if you have a h264 decoder.
