  1. Hello,

I have a DVD which I want to make a backup of (for info : Völkerball live concert of Rammstein). I used DVD Shrink to copy the whole DVD to my harddrive. I get two folders : audio_ts (empty) and video_ts (with the usual stuff in it). At that point, opening the main folder (or just the video_ts) with VLC works perfectly, even the menus.

I then burned the two folders audio_ts and video_ts on a DVD+R DL. The burning went without a hitch, but I can't read the DVD afterwards. If I try with my DVD player, it just shows a black screen. If I try with VLC, it gives an error message (saying that the media cannot be read...). If I open the video_ts folder of the DVD with VLC, it starts playing the various parts, but when it gets to the menu I can't interact with it (clicking on the various options doesn't do anything...)

Does anyone know where is the problem? Is it some copy protection stuff, and if so, then why does it work when it's on the HDD but not when burned?

    Thanks,

    chtit_draco

Did you use Verbatim +R DL media ?
Did you burn with Imgburn ?

If you answered No to either of those questions, you have your answer

I used a TDK DVD+R DL 8x... and burned it with Debian's default burning software (I had to swap computers between the ripping and burning because the first one didn't support DL).

Why is it so important to use Verbatim/ImgBurn...? And why wouldn't it work with others?

Guns1inger answered your question. Look through countless posts in the forum about successfully burning dual-layer DVD discs. You'll find what consistently works and what never works. No further explanation is needed.

  5. So the problem lies with the burning and not the ripping? What I mean is, if I were to rip it again, but this time wihout bonus, etc. and with compressing the video files to get below 4.7GB, then burn it on a DVD SL, it should work? So this is in no way related to copy protection or anything?

  6. Its probably not a copy protection issue, or you would not have been able to rip to the hard drive in the first place. Try the compress-to-SL-DVD option, and if that works you'll know for sure it was a DL burning issue. As others have noted, DL media burning is a black art that fails half the time: you have to use exactly the right media in exactly the right burner with exactly the right burning software. Its such an unpredictable (and expensive) pain in the ass that most of us gave it up: its much simpler to split a DVD-9 original across two DVD-5s, or compress it to fit a single disc. DL media is flakey in the extreme, it stretches the recordable DVD concept past its breaking point, and since most mfrs these days can't even produce a reliable SL disc they should be totally avoided in DL. The only DL media proven to be fairly reliable is the Verbatim, and even then only if produced in Singapore (check the wrapper on the spindle before buying). TDK, like most other once-glorious names, is now just a brand slapped onto bottom-of-the-barrel garbage media- its among the worst you can buy. Stick to Verbatim for DL, and preferably SL too. If you don't mind shopping online, the Taiyo Yuden Premium 8x -R is even better than the Verbatim for SL.

  7. Thank you for your thorough answer I shrank the DVD files, burned them on a single DVD-R SL and it worked perfectly. Dual layer just isn't worth it...

Just some additional information for someone who may read this thread in the future...

Verbatim cut back a lot on having India make their DL media after all the complaints about it. The DataLifePlus DVD+R DL media is ONLY made in Singapore. The 10x DVD+R DL media is currently ONLY made in Singapore as well. If you buy lower speed (6x or less) non-DataLifePlus DVD+R DL discs, they may be made in India or Singapore. So it's easy to get Singapore made media all the time if you pay attention to what you buy.
