  1. Hi all,
after I installed ffmpegx apparently without problems I tried encoding for viewing on an iPod a movie I had just ripped with MacTheRipper.

I drag the VIDEO_TS folder on the ffmpegx panel but the software responds "NOTS_KEY"

As I haven't found this error anywhere in the forum, I am assuming it's got to do with my ripped files - any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Only mplayer/mencoder is able to process VIDEO_TS folders, thus ruling out the iPod presets.
Try ripping to a single file, so that every preset can handle your source file.

  3. ah-ha! Thanks for the pointer. I guess major reads this forum, so a clearer error message would be sweet !

I am now encoding my first movie, and had to tick off the "Encode with Quicktime" option - is this because I do not have QT Pro on the iMac?

No, not because of Pro, but because you do not have the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component (€ 20) installed, which QuickTime would use to read (decode) MPEG-2 video in VOB files.
