Hey Everyone,
I recently bought my parents the Samsung DVD-V9800 player for the holidays after doing some research and checking here to see if it was able to be hacked to be region free. Everything checked out so I bought it, set it up, and it works great. Just recently they went ahead and tried a PAL disc (it's a region one player I assume, bought it from a Best Buy in NJ), it didn't work which was to be expected, and so I remembered I never did the hack.
I follow these instructions:
"""Region code hack posted by khkim, November 03 2008:
Now I did it today. I used the same script that 'Silver Surfers' posted for DVD-HD860.
My region code is 1 & version starts with '040808.02...'. My remote is 000613J.
You don't need special code for your current retion ('2-9-3-3-4' stuffs). It never worked to me. Samsung probably have changed the firmware and it seems easier for region hack!!!
1. OFF/ON your DVD
2. Open the tray
3. Press 'INFO', you'll see version code
4. Press '9' repeatedly untill you see '9' overlapped with the version code
5. OFF/ON and enjoy!
I didn't expect it would work so I pressed like crazy and I recognized '9' appeared. I don't know how many times and pressed. I did never try it again. """

So it didn't work (for me). The major thing I noticed that was different from the instructions was step 4: I wasn't able to get the '9' on the screen to 'overlap' with the version code. The '9' would appear, in the top left, and if the version code was still up, it would have been overlapping, but it seemed that as long as the version code was on the screen the '9' would not appear. After the version code went away, I was able to get the '9' to come up. I don't know if I'm being nitpicky but it's something I noticed. Below is all the other information I have to provide for the issue.
Version Code: 061908.03.9800 - Macrovision V662
Number on the bottom front of remote: 00061J
Error that appear on screen after PAL disc is inserted: "This disc cannot be played. Please check the TV system."
So I've got both a different version code and a different remote than the steps, but for the most part I was about to follow the instructions. I've looked around on the forums and the hacks section but haven't been able to find more info regarding my problem. (If I'm blind and need to be redirected I apologize in advance for being a noob.) I read the "how not to make a stupid question post" post and I hope to have followed it to the appropriate standards. Any help would be awesome! I feel find of bad because my parents were really looking forward to watching their PAL dvds since our old Cyberhome kicked the bucket and now they can't. If I left out important information or if anyone has a question please feel free to ask. Thank you in advance for any suggestions/solutions!

You are in an NTSC country, obviously using an NTSC DVD player, and watching on an NTSC TV. PAL has NOTHING to do with region coding. You are trying to play a DVD for PAL system (Europe, China) which will not play in an NTSC-only DVD player, regardless of the region hack of your DVD player.
Also, you run the risk of wrecking the firmware and voiding the warranty of the DVD player with the hack.
