I just picked up a 5990 - great player. At least it plays more than my 642, and actually tries to give some slight mention as to why it can't play a specific file properly.However...
I'll admit up front that I'm a newbie when it comes to HDMI. I've tried to connect it to the HDMI port on my HDTV (relatively new, bought sometime within the last six months), using an HDMI audio/video cable, and... nothing. No picture, no sound. I believe the manual only mentions HDMI-video cables, and I hadn't hooked up the relevant audio cable - I figured I'd see if the HDMI connection worked, first. Or does the fact that it's an A/V cable instead of video-only make a difference?
Either way, the 5990 still doesn't let me access the HDMI video options with the cable connected. So, my 5990's left to connect through component.![]()

If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

My 5992 just connected.
First turn everything off.
Disconnect component cable.
Connect HDMI cable.
Turn on TV, Switch TV to HDMI input.
Turn on DVD player
You should see the picture.
Also, HDMI audio is turned on or off in the second setup menu.
Third menu has HDMI resolution settings: Auto, 480p,576p,720p,1080i,1080pRecommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

I tried that, but the TV still displays "No Signal" from the HDMI input.
The player's currently set to use component, with progressive display turned on. Would that make a difference? I'd tried basically the same process when I first hooked up the 5990, though, and while I had no problem getting into the HDMI Audio menu, the HDMI options in the third menu were still greyed out (I'd connected it to basic RCA A/V as well as having the HDMI cable connected, after trying to get the HDMI cable alone to work for a while, so that I could see if I needed to change anything in the options.)If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -

At the time, only the HDMI cable was connected. But this time, I tried pulling the plug on the unit for about thirty minutes, and then repeating the process again, as you mentioned... and it worked. Thanks!
I thought I'd basically tried that when I first hooked it up, though. Weird.
So, with HDMI, the TV/receiver does have to be on first, for the devices to detect it?If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
