I'm going to soon be building myself a new computer. I am curious where you all make your online purchases. The two main ones I have used in the past are newegg and tigerdirect. Are there any others that you could recommend for decent priced computer parts..

I'd guess those two are going to be the winners. I've bought from both and have had good results.

Of course you can always try amazon. Another one might be fry's. I don't know what their shipping rates are. I'm sure you can have it shipped to you even if you don't have a fry's in your state.

Just make sure you get one that gives breaks on shipping costs. That is one thing I hate about buying online. I don't like paying for shipping. Some of the smaller stuff might be able to get free shipping. However if you buy a desktop case or a monitor I doubt you'd get cheap shipping on those monsters.

Newegg wins hands down as they have the best customer service and low prices. I wouldn't buy from any other online retailer. Fry's does have some good deals but shipping for Hawaii can be more than Newegg. For my case fans, cable adapters, etc. I buy from Petrastechshop.com and Svc.com because they ship USPS Priority Mail.

When one says "parts" to me, I think of things down to the resistor level. If you have parts synonymous with components, I'd always add techbargains.com to your inquiry. For example, this morning they've done a good job of pulling together most of the "Cyber Monday" sales links you could think of.

I like what I've seen of them, but if you ever needed to talk to a live person there, I'm afraid you'd be S O L.
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

As I look around my computer room and basement tech museum these component vendors come to mind.

Fry's (the store) for most things.
NewEgg for motherboards and PCI cards
Staples for external HDD, DVD drives, DVD blanks and laptops (mostly Black Friday)
    Costco/Sams for monitors
    Others.

This exercise makes me aware just how much I've bought at Fry's over the last 22 years. I once knew Ms. Kathy Kolder from Silicon Valley parties in the old days. She mostly runs the chain now. Never met a Fry brother.

I think they owe me a Christmas card at least for the many thousands I've spent there. Not likely.

PS: Kathy Kolder, Exec VP Frys (all above her in the organization are Fry family)

mwave.com is a good site. I've bought plenty from them as long ago as 10 years ago ... probably longer ago than that come to think of it.

It took me 1 month to complete a build that I did for a friend. I had to RMA back to Newegg the cpu cooler (twice), cpu (once) and the motherboard 3x's. So you can see why it took so long for the build to be completed. Anyway all those times I had to RMA those items I never got any lip service from a live customer service rep. at Newegg. They never did hassle me about the RMA's. The first cpu cooler replacement Newegg paid $93.00 for overnight shipping via UPS.

Remember now I'm in Honolulu, Hawaii so the time that it would take Newegg to receive the defective hardware and for me to wait for the replacements is a long process. Newegg waived all the shipping charges everytime I ordered the new motherboards. Because I was not going to wait out the long process for them to ship me a new motherboard after they received the defective one. I didn't have to pay the shipping cost when I sent the defective hardware back to them.

If I had waited for the replacement motherboards the computer wouldn't have been delivered to my friend 2 weeks ago. I'd still be either completing the computer or waiting for the replacement motherboard. I also informed Newegg to post in my acct. that their warehouse peeps don't know how to pack items in a box & they need to bubble wrap the cpu and use packing peanuts on top of the motherboard box. The first box I received from them had the 15 lb. power supply sitting on top of the Intel CPU (which had no bubble wrap around it) and the motherboard had packing peanuts only beneath it, there was no padding on top of that box. I did post on resellers site about my dissatisfaction with their warehouse personnel not knowing how to pack items in a box.
Low and behold when I received the last motherboard box it was buried beneath packing peanuts. I ordered for myself a Q9550 cpu that was delivered to me the day after Thanksgiving. It was wrapped nicely with the huge bubble wrap. It was good to see that they took my packing comments seriously.

My experience with Newegg's customer service is top notch. Yes I was furious with the defective hardware but everything was resolved to my satisfaction. I don't know of any other online retailer who would PAY for all those 2day FEDEX shipping charges to Hawaii. Sorry for the long post!

  18. For online orders, I mostly use Newegg and TigerDirect. However, CDW has been very good too, just lately purchased from them.

B&M orders, used to be mostly Compusa and BestBuy. Now it's only BestBuy. Those are only for things I need right now though.

Buying OEM hard drives from Newegg is risky. While they have promised to address poor packing issues, I have not seen much improvement. HDs (in their mylar envelopes) are thinly padded, tossed into a carton with some styrofoam peanuts, and left to bounce their way to your door. I've returned shipments to them (at their expense) and now buy my hard drives elsewhere (zipzoomfly, for example).

Anything newegg sells that comes in its own good packaging should arrive undamaged but those OEM hard drives...*eh*

Whenever I order from NewEgg (NYC) the order arrives nicely packed the next day or sometimes 2days from a nearby CA shipping point and always with full CA taxes. That is why the Frys store Friday sales are an alternative. Frys (stores only) often beat all online prices. They control their vendors like none other. Walmart must worship Frys buyers.

The reason is Frys can get the million dollar deals while the others need tens to hundreds of million deals because of size. Also Frys is private so can slow growth to internal capital generated. This business model is similar to Ikea but with brand names under tight discipline..

My Newegg is from inside my state too, arrives in mere days, usually packed good. My last OEM RAM was poorly packed in the big box, but it was inside a small box. The small box bounced around inside a bigger box. I didn't quite understand the logic behind that one.
