  1. I have a number of .flv car mechanic movie files which because I can't control very well with the vlc movie player (like forward movement) and because they will not play in a universal player like windows media player, I want to convert them to either the .avi format or maybe the .mp4 format. I think the .mp4 format results in a smaller file size but I don't know if it is a good format to convert to. So I am leaning toward the .avi format unless someone here advises otherwise.

I am using the gvc video converter. It lets you change the number of frames and kb in the sound . Since all the videos include speech only, I thought I would set it on 64kb mono since I don't see how it would help to have speech in stereo nor the quality kb be that high.

For frames I thought I would set it on 29. (is it .97) frames. I just want to use these movie files on my computer for reference but would like to be able to convert them to DVD format if the need should ever arise.

Am I on the right track?

Download the Klite codec pack and the .flv files should play in Windows Media Player.

the last thing anyone should do is install a codec "pack". they cause more problems then malware. just as hard to get rid of also.

    only install needed codecs individually.

If you're simply looking for a way to play them back easily, FLVPlayer is a good free software for doing so.

MPC-HC should be just as easy for playing also
    I'd use MediaCoder for re-encoding

    NO codec packs, NO way...imo
