  1. I am very new to VCD/SVCD but from reading I have these questions:

I am currently capturting my footage with Pinnacle's DV500. The capture settings are: 720x480, NTSC, 29.7 fps and audio at 48khz.

Since SVCD is 480x480 and requires audio at 41khz would it be possible to convert this to SVCD while maintaining aspect ratio and the whole picture (not cropped)? Would audio be in sync? What would be the settings for this in TMPGEnc, or do I need to experiment.

One more question, should I use VBR on CBR? If VBR then how would I know how much would fit on a CD since the bit rate is not constent?

Sorry for all these newbie questions, but I'll catch on real quick. I promise.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

I've created 100s of SVCDs just using TMPGEnc's built-in SVCD template with my own variations on it. No real effort required, TMPGE will do all the conversions without complaint (I have a Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge).

One more question, should I use VBR on CBR? If VBR then how would I know how much would fit on a CD since the bit rate is not constent?
I start with the built-in SVCD template, change to CQ (constant quality)100%, bitrate of 2000 for VHS tape or Cable TV with the slowest (best) motion detection.

I also frameserve from VirtualDub into TMPGE so I can apply some filtering. My basic filterpack is brightness 110%, noise reduction, and 2D smoothing.

I consistently get around 88000 frames (45+ minutes) on a CD without overburning. Occasionally I need a small overburn but haven't had any trouble playing them.
