I just had a coworker ditch his Sony standalone BluRay player for a PS3 actually. He cited the slow startup time of the standalone player plus the ability to upgrade firmware/software on the PS3 as his reasons for switching. Since it's a cheaper option than most standalone players I don't see why you wouldn't get a PS3. The only thing I don't like about it as a BluRay player is the remote. AFAIK there isn't an RF or IR interface for it that would allow a universal remote to control it so that's one more remote to add to the rest.

The Blu-ray players and discs are too expensive, IMO. Moreover, my standard DVDs look great on my 50" HDTV and I don't see a need to spend more money

I actually owned a bluray rom player for the computer BEFORE I bought the ps3.

It is just more convenient to use a settop player for movies than the pc. Even though I have it setup as a htpc its still easier to turn on two units - the ps3 and the tv.

I have 4 bluray movies now and plan on buying a few once the summer movies hit the disc market. Mainly Dark Knight and Mummy 3. Probably Indy 4 as well. Now I'll have to gauge it if the INDY Trilogy is finally released on BLURAY. THat may tip the scale on which to buy - the solo 4 or the quad pack if it comes out.

  7. As a gamer, and Netflix subscriber, the choice was easy for me. I just bought a PS3.
So far, the only BluRay movie I've come across with artifacts was National Treasure: Book of Secrets.
There was faint 'Mosquito Noise' in a number of brightly-lit outdoor scenes.
It was rather irritating, but not so bad as to make it unwatchable.

I agree that the PS3's remote is craptastic; mostly because I've become acustomed to using the Snapstream Firefly Remote with my HTPC.
The Firefly has the Stop Button to the right of play, whereas the PS3's Remote has it in-between Play and Pause.
So, most of the time, when I try and pause a bluray movie, I instead press Stop.
Luckily, the PS3 will resume playback where I stopped it, but that only makes it slightly less irritating.
I'm sure that I'll eventually get the hang of it, but I have to wonder what posessed them to make a huge Stop Button and place it where they did in the first place.

    @joe the dude -

check out the nyko remote for the ps3. Its really small and efficient and comes with a usb ir dongle. That will let you use a programmable remote with it. However I prefer the nyko remote since its so small and efficient.

EDIT - Best part is i don't think it was any more than 20.00 or so. Probably cheaper used on ebay and the like.

Really? Have you used a universal remote with its IR receiver? If it works with any commercially available universal remote than this may solve my dilemma. Is it also able to use the PS button to turn the system on and off?

I bought the PS3 remote on a whim but now I generally just use a controller as a remote since I usually have it sitting on the coffee table with the other remotes for when I'm gaming, but I can see how a non-gamer using a PS3 would have issues using a game controller as a remote.

I believe internet reviews have said that the ir interface does not allow direct access to turn the unit on and off. No personal experience.

I also have not programmed a remote myself yet. HOwever there are multiple threads on the net about succesfully porgramming remotes like the logitech harmony series.

What bitrate are they using on those bluray discs ??

I just bought the superBit version of "Panic Room" -- probably the last sbit anywhere. I think they use 30p frame rate, my "..5th Element" was 30p, so i'm figuring they're all 30p. It'll be interesting to see.

Also, has anyone actually tests a sbit disc on bluray equipment or 37" or larger screens ??
I'd be interested in knowing your success rate with them.

    Thanks,

FYI Blu-Ray (new) players can be had for under $300 at Wal-Mart for those not interested in a PS3, but I recommend the PS3 because of it's upgradability, not to mention the other features it includes. They're also working on DVR functionality and movies are available for rent or purchase at the PS Store online. I like the way Blu-Ray movies look, especially the newer stuff coming from better quality / hi-def masters as opposed to the older movies. For the older stuff, I still buy DVD and take advantage of the upconversion capabilities.

@viral1 - what dvr functions are they looking at for the ps3?

Is this aimed at competiting with the media center functions of the xbox 360?

Also will this need to use the internal drive or will they make an external drive without a 4gig file limit? I assume this will require the purchase of some type of adapter to get inputs into the ps2 since it only has outputs currently - sans usb of course.

I can't imagine they'd let you take the stuff off the harddrive. UNLESS of course your talking about a "sony" authorized authroring app that would set restrictions on the burning.

This could be interesting. However since I have a cable dvr and 2 tuners on my computer (plus the cable dvr is a dual tuner model - records two hd at once) I don't know that I'd buy another one.

ANy initila prices yet? I might do it for 50-70 bucks not if its a over a 100.00. I don't need more tv recording capacity unless this is unique.

NOW on the other hand if this has component input recording capability that would be another story.

No. This should be a poll.
