I have a 3 year old Sony 5-disk changer (non-upscaling) and it's built in 5.1 surround sound hard wired into my home theater room. I wanted an upscaling 1080i player to go with my 1080i Hitachi 57". Bought a Phillips DVP3962 at Walmart for $39.95.
Question, will the audio output when fed into the Sony provide the same 5.1 sound that the Sony does??

You should edit your title to say DVD player, not CD player.... fyi.

Anyway what connections do you have on your amplifier and new dvd player?

Chances are both have at least a fiber optic connection. If it does than that is all you need to get the same 5.1 audio. Your other options include a spdif connection or multi channel connections.

Basically you should be able to use your existing cable on your new dvd player. Just check your manual on the new dvd player. I can almost garauntee 100% that you will be just fine on 5.1 audio.

Very few new players support individual audio outputs (6 indiidual channels). To get surround sound from the 3962 you will need to use the digital coax output to your receiver or the HDMI output to your receiver (or HDMI to your TV and then connect the TV to your receiver). Whether or not your receiver or TV support those connections you'll have to determine.

I had a similar player with the 5.1 decoder built in and a surround sound amp with the discrete 5.1 inputs. But as mentioned, if your amp doesn't have coaxial or optical 5.1 inputs, or a HDMI input, you would likely need to replace it. The amps with built-in decoders are much more versatile.

I had to replace the player and the amp. Good news is surround sound amps and players are a lot cheaper now and there are a lot less cables to plug in.

    And welcome to our forums.
