Seriously, are there any? I have tested out Premier and Ulead studio so far and both can't recognize the format. For codecs I use the K Lite Codec Pack. I just want simple linear editing, nothing more complex than windows movie maker (which, coincidently, imports both).
Thanks!

Are you sure it's because of the divx/xvid codec? What is the audio in your avi files? Many editors can't handle avi with ac3 audio for example.
But I haven't seen any advanced editor with GOOD support for downloaded material such as divx,xvid...it's usually a hit or miss if it will work.
And I'm moving you to the editing forum section. -

So, could anyone recommend a way to batch convert files to (random video codec name) with an audio codec that both works well and is common enough to go into premier, ulead, vegas and so on?

I wouldn't let K-lite within 50 feet of any of my computers, JMO. But another simple Divx/Xvid editor is VirtualDub.
BTW, Divx/Xvid is a terrible format to edit in, as are most high compression formats. Divx/Xvid have keyframes every 300 frames by default. That means you will have to re-encode at least at the cuts and pastes unless you cut on one of those keyframes. And every re-encode lowers the quality further.

Most times Xvid/Divx uses MP3 audio. I would recommend MP3 CBR to keep from having problems later. -
Divx and xvid are chiefly designed as playback formats, and while their compression schemes allow for decent picture quality in a smaller file size than many other video formats, they are not edit-friendly. To edit on Premiere, Ulead, Vegas, etc., you will need to upconvert to DV-AVI.

One word - conflicts. Installing a pack like that, with lots of different crap to "play everything" can have the opposite effect.. One codec can interfere with another.
The best approach is to use a tool like GSpot, ascertain exactly what audio/video codecs you need, and ONLY what you need to minimize anything happening.
