  2. By converting to DVD specifications, you are more certain that it will play in all standalone players, even those that are NOT DIVX certified

Even if a standalone player is DIVX certified, there are many limitations on the specifications/settings of the AVI they can play (e.g. you can't have GMC, QPel, you can't use high bitrates, etc..)

Another reason is some people might want to reauthor, add chapters, menus, music etc....

  3. There have been some rare occasions when an avi file wouldn't play on my standalone player, but I was able to convert it to a dvd and play it.

Jomapil, I would say the simple answer is there's no reason to convert it if it plays back properly for you, that's the best solution, IMO. Every conversion causes quality loss.

Thank you to everybody who answers to my question.
I have a second home at 300 Kms of the usual and I go there many times during one to 3 weeks - 1 month each time.
My DVD player, here, plays Divx, Mpeg, etc. but my DVD there is an old one that doesn't do that. By that I wanted to buy another one to replace the old one. But the answer of Poisondeathray avoided I waste the money in the new because I now know that I can ConvertXtoDVD and see the movies in the old one. Thank you very much Poison... and the other friends that answered to me.

    Cheers.

Excuse me but I forgot a doubt arised from Redwudz :
It's perfectly logical that a copy from a VHS player to other VHS lost quality. But in this case, if the copy is done bit to bit or byte to byte, this copy is exactly equal! So how can this last copy lost quality?

    Cheers.

If you do a direct digital copy, say Divx to Divx or DVD to DVD, there will be basically no loss. It's when you convert your video to a different format, say DVD to Divx, where you will see quality losses. Divx/Xvid is a highly compressed format and usually lower quality than MPEG-2 DVD.

Converting from Divx/Xvid to DVD with a program like ConvertX shouldn't give you much loss as the Divx/Xvid format is lower quality most times. But the quality will be no better than the Divx/Xvid at best.

Converting from DVD to Divx/Xvid can be very good quality, depends on the encoder settings.
