I tried removing the ATAPI/IDE controllers and letting it refind the disc drives, and also tried the MS Knowledge Base tip where you removed certain registry keys and reboot.

It doesn't show up in my PC, but shows up in BIOS as Lite-On DVD driver rather than a SOHW-1673S.

Is this a burner you just installed or is this a problem with a existing drive? I assume you mean you 'uninstalled' the channel from the channel menu? Removing may also work, but uninstall is the proper method.

My first thought is a bad cable or a cable with a bad connector. I would try a different one. Or the drive itself has a problem.

You also want to check in 'Control Panels>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Storage>Computer Management (Local)' You should see your drive there.

Sorry. but there's no Storage option under Computer Management.

By remove, I just mean uninstalled. I just ordered a new burner anyway.

First thing to do, swap the power connection on the unit.

If psu has another available power channel, connect it to unit and try again.

12 volt fail = bios see's drive , os dose not , pressing eject button produces no response
5 volt fail = bios dosent see it, yet os can (really wacko), yet eject button works

I think the old memory box may have kicked back in ... been dealing with rootkits all month, and im worn out.

So buying a new burner unit, may have been in vain, when you really needed a new power supply.

In your case, export an registry keys to a safe location before making ANY changes, or your playing russian roulette with your system

The eject button produces a response, so it might not be the 12+ volt rail...

Does DVDROM drive show up in Device Manager, and did you try uninstalling and letting Windows detect it again?

Now it doesn't even show up under BIOS.

Is just a case of a dying drive?

bad drive, cable or power into it are about all the choices left if it doesn't show up in the bios.

Now I have a new DVD burner installed, and it shows up, but my main DVD-ROM drive just shows up as a bunch of Japanese-looking characters in the BIOS, and it's not recognized by Windows now.
