I'm using MPC 6.4.9.1 and any time I play DVD files some super ugly subtitles are automatically loaded. This is not a case of hard encoded subtitles in the video stream - the subtitles are being dynamically loaded and overlaid on top of the video. Also, this magic subtitler cannot be controlled through MPC and loads subtitles for MPEG streams which do not even have a subtitle stream. When I have a dvd loaded in MPC, I can no longer choose File -> Properties from the menu -- "Properties" is grayed out.
I think this problem started when I installed CCCP. I have since uninstalled CCCP (and QTLite and SUPER) and I don't have any codecs or packs installed now, but the problem persists. There is no Haali or ffdshow tray icon (nor control panel, or add/remove programs entry).
Any idea what's going on?

Try using a program such as codec sniper to look through your installed codecs. There are likely several codecs and other apps still on your system as the uninstall routine of most codec packs does a poor job of cleaning up. Hence the reason codec packs are NOT endorsed around here. When they work, all is great. But when they don't, it is hell getting your system back to normal without performing a fresh install.
