I seem to be missing codecs to play some video files in both media player 11 and nero 8. Is there a place to download some sort of current codec pack?

Use g-spot to find out what codecs you need, and install only those codecs.

If it is only for playback, try VLC or the KM Player, as they use their own built-in codecs.

    Codec packs are bad news.

I would strongly advise against installing any codec pack. We have answered hundreds of posts about the damage they have done. Just installing codecs at random is a very bad idea.

Best is to drop one of those unplayable files into Gspot 2.70 and see which codec you need, then only install that one. One sort of codec pack that is fairly safe is ffdshow. It works well for Xvids, Divx and quite a few other formats and doesn't damage your system. WMP can be particularly difficult to repair if you mess up your codecs.
