  4. Pinnacle Studio 7 is also a good entry level editor/capture for DV. You can capture low rez/easy on the HD preview files, edit, then only download the scenes you keep to render.

You should make sure, if you are going to do lots of video, you have a big fast hard disk.

Try capturing with mediocampeg r/t. It compresses mpeg1-2 real time right from your dv tape. There's a demo version available.

Also try Ulead DVD Workshop. There's also a 30 day demo version. It's a very powerful VCD / SVCD / DVD authoring program which also incorporates real time mpeg 1-2 capture.

  10. When you transfer a file from your MiniDV camcorder to your PC via Firewire, you aren't encoding or capturing - you're just transferring the digital video file (DV file).

DV uses 3.6 megs a second/216 megs a minute/~13 gigs an hour for storage. Yes, the files will be large!

I use ScenalyzerLive as my transfer program. Best $33 I've spent.

Once you transfer the DV file from camcorder to hard drive, you can use TMPGEnc to transcode the file to MPEG-1 or whatever other format you want.
