  1. Hello, I'm new to this forum. I want to edit a avi video file. When I try to open it using virtualdub I get the following error message. If I go ahead and do the job the resulting video segment's audio sound seems to be out of sync with the video. How to rectify the problem?

You will get sync problem if the audio is VBR. But just use virtualdubmod instead, and when it ask if you want to rewrite the header say no.

  3. Thank you. I tried using virtualdubmod as you suggested but it didn't fix my problem. Is there any other method to solve the sync issues? BTW, aside from virtualdub I'm unable to open the file with any normal video players with which I usually use to watch the movies[like windows media player and also I'm unable to edit with Nero vision] The video format is avi, codec used is XVID.

AVI Demux handles VBR Mp3 much better than Virtualdub. Or you can export the audio as either PCM or CBR MP3 audio, then replace the VBR mp3 with the new track.

However none of this should stop the file playing back in WMP, so you have other problems to fix as well.

  5. I get the error, attempt to open "file name.avi" failed, when I tried to open it using Avidemux. This is driving me nuts. The only video editing softwares which opens my file successfully are virtualdub and virtualdubmod [Movie maker, Nero and Avidemux failed!]

You either have a codec problem, or the file is suspect.

If you can open it in virtualdubmod then do so. Say No when asked if you want to re-write the header, then click on Streams -> Streamlist. Right-click your audio track and select Full processing Mode. Right-click again, and select Compression. Select a codec (PCM is the safest, but will probably be bigger than the video). Finally, click on Save WAV and save you new audio track.

Click Add and select the audio track you just created. Click on the old audio track, then click on Disable. Right-click on the new audio track and select Direct Stream Copy. OK your way back to the main screen.

File -> Save as to create a new avi with the new audio track.

If any of these steps fail, your avi is the cause.
