Does anyone know how to stop Tmpgenc Express or Tmpgenc DVD author producing Jerky video? The picture quality is great, the sounds also good. The DVD's never jump or freeze, but when converting from avi to mpgenc then authoring to dvd the video is jerky. It's kind of like the preview image you get when encoding, but not quite so bad. If I can fix this, then for once all my encodes will come out good

You would need to give a bit more info before anyone will be able to help. What do you mean by jerky, all the time or just on mation (which could be a field order problem). What is your source? Are you deinterlacing?

Without the answers to these questions, all anyone can do is have a stab in the dark.

It does it all the time. My source is AVI. I don't know what you mean by deinterlacing? Thanks for the help

AVI is a wrapper, it can be anything. Is it DV from a Digital camcorder, is it Divx, Xvid or any of the multitudes of other variations?

What settings are you using in the encoder? Are you encoding PAL footage to NTSC or the other way round? That would cause jerky playback due to the differing frame rates.

What settings do you use in TMPgenc, that might give us somewhere to start from.

It's DivX, I'm encoding to Pal as I live in the UK. I'm not sure if the original AVI is NTSC I don't know how to check that. When I encoded using WinAVI it came out without the jerkyness but it had audio synch problems. I want to use tmpgenc, but I would like to sort the slight jerkyness so that my encodes are good.

If the framerate is 23.976fps (or 29.97fps) then the source was originally NTSC. You can find out by opening the AVI in GSpot, or by opening it in VDub and going File->File Information, among other ways. If you're always encoding those NTSC sourced AVIs, that would probably explain it.

Your UK spec DVD player will play NTSC as well as PAL. If the source is NTSC, encode as NTSC and you shouldn't get the jerkyness as the frame rate won't have to be changed.

Another way to see what format a file is, is to look at the resolution. Assuming the files are DVD compliant (which they may or may not be) have a look at 'What is DVD' at the top left of this page and look at the complianant frame sizes.
