Ave,
I've only ever used Verbatim media (DVD-R and DVD+R DL) for my Pioneer DVR-111D Burner and never had any problems. I was on Newegg looking to order some more discs when I saw this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817505010
($24.99 Shipped!)
It's a 100 Pack of RiDATA DVD-R 16X for $10 less then what I would pay for Verbatim. For no other reason but cost, I was thinking about getting this pack. I mainly use these discs for burning movies. Does anyone know how these discs are with the Pioneer DVR-111D? If they have a good compatibility & success rate, I'll give them a shot.
Thanks!

Ritek/RiData turned to crap when they went beyond 8x. Not one of my 4x or 8x Ritek or RiData discs show any signs of problems so far.

About once a month Officemax offers Verbatims at comparable prices.
If you have a history of success with Verbatim, why switch? -
Ridata is RITEK's in-house brand, and the media is mediocre quality. Mid-grade quality. Given the price of Ridata vs Verbatim, Ridata is severely overpriced.

Hmm... judging by all your comments, I guess I should just stick to and wait for sales on Verbatim. The only reason I considered RiDATA was the $10 difference and I really didn't know about it's Quality.

You can also get bulk 8x TY at stores such as Supermediastore and Meritiline for about $25 shipped on Sale, and they often have them on sale.

Or this until Nov. 10 Sony 100 piece spindles at Best Buy for $22.99.

They usually work OK. $2 cheaper than NewEgg too. I usually wait til BB has Verbatims on sale however I need printer ink so I'll be there anyway and look and see if any of the spindles are Made in Japan. -
TY is short for Taiyo Yuden. TY and Verbatim are known as the most reliable and dependable discs.
I use TY DVD-R and Verbatim DVD+R DL media. I haven't had any issues (at least media related) using either one. I have a Pioneer 112D and a NEC 3520.Google is your Friend -
Based on my own experience, Ritek DVD-R media has very poor shelf life. I have a number of videos that are five or six years old. NONE of the Ritek videos are still playable. I also recorded some on Princo at the same period of time. At least these still play. I am not boosting Princo; it's poor to mediocre media but from my experience, Ritek is the worst of all. I know Verbatim is good and I wouldn't hesitate to use it but I use Taiyo Yuden now with consistently good results.

I'm definately staying away from RiDATA. Did not know of it's reputation.
Well the cheapest TY I found was $29 for the spindle. Verbatim is $33 at Newegg so $4 doesn't really justify the switch. (Free Shipping). Both DVD-R 100pk & DVD+R DL 20pk are Free Shipping on Newegg, both are about $34.
No offense TBoneit, but nothing good has ever come out of anything SONY in my experience - so I'll stay away from those.I don't suffer from Chronic Insanity & Psychosomatic Multiple Personality Disorder!

I buy from Newegg a lot, but they are rarely the cheapest for media purchases. http://www.rima.com is one reliable source for media. My feeling is that you either want to pay what it costs for good, reliable media or you don't. If you do, then don't worry about saving one or two dollars and just buy when need the discs.

What they said. They work OK in the 111D at 8X, no faster, but don't pay over $.20 each for them. As hech54 said, the old G04s & G05s were better.
I could successfully burn the 8X at higher speed than the 16X. -
Actually I've had very good results with SonyD21 (DVD+R) which are the only media found thus far whose recordings play with no problems on a Mintek portable player. Even Verbatim -R won't play at all on that player even though they play without problems on 4 other players. SonyD21 has become my media of choice for that reason.

No, TDK is using CMC.

The reason I prefer Taiyo Yuden over Verbatim is that Taiyo Yuden makes their own media. Verbatim keeps fiddly-farting around with OEM sources and despite their "hands-on QC" claims they can't catch all of the funny stuff that goes on.

TDk is now owned by Imation. It is using CMC made in Taiwan, and some made in India media as well (also CMC?).

You can get 100 TY Valueline 8X for $28 shipped from supermediastore and shop4tech.com. These are likely to be TYG03 16X as not, and even if not, I find the 111 likes 8X media better anyway. Shop4tech sends out 10% coupons about once every month or two if you get on their email list, $25.20/100 for genuine TYs.
