  1. I ran a test using tmpgenc 2.54, 2.51 plus, and 2.51 using the same template for all three tests. It was a 2 pass vbr with 7000 average bit rate. What I found was that 2.51 and 2.51 plus times were identical and were about 30 percent faster than 2.54. Has anyone else tested this versions and came up with these results? My computer is a 1.4gh athlon. If anyone found a way to make tmpgenc 2.54 faster than the other versions, I would appreciate knowing how they did it!

I also found it slower, not quite as slow as your findings but then I was comparing against 2.53.

I presume you have enabled the cache under environmental settings?

I posted a question a few daze ago and got nothing back. My observations were similar to yours. I found that 2.54+ was woefully slow compared to 2.54. Standard DVD Rip and convert to VCD using inbuilt templates using 2.54 in 2 to 3 hrs. The same using 2.54+ takes upto 75% longer.

  5. 2.54+ I use is MUCH faster then any other TMPG version I used in the past. If you want to use VBR 2-pass in 2.54 + then then you should use the "new" 2-pass VBR vs. the "old 2-pass VBR".
Also for perfomance increase you MUST enable HD cache settings up to 6 Gb per 1h movie.

I came out with 30 - 50% time decrease compared with ant previous TMPGEnc version. (Read the other postings and you'll see that many people share these thoughts)

However, I found out the CQ encoding mode produces for me the best quality mpeg-2 file and encoding time is smaller up to 30% compared to the "new" 2-pass VBR. BUT it produces slightly larger mpeg-2 file.

  6. My test was done on a 60 second clip and I had cache enabled and set to 4.8 gb. Maybe I don't understand this setting and if I don't, I would appreciate a definition of what it does, but I didn't think that a 60 second clip needed that much cache.

Tmpeg 2.54a Plus is much faster than any other Tmpeg version.

be sure to enable CPU - Multithread setting - prefetch video (only !!) up to 32 MB (even if you have single processor system)

    and also "the cache" !!

Multithread setting increases up to 20% (only if you frameserve !) and cache also increases up to 15% (only with second pass !)

Goranlucic, where is this 'new' 2-pass VBR? Is it something only available to the purchased version as the latest freeware one only has the option of 'old type' 2pass VBR?

I also agree with your view that the CQ setting procuces beter MPEG2 results. I find it better for motion scenes and it seems to produce a more crisp and colur rich result.

  10. q1aqza: The "new 2-pass VBR" I have it with registered version.

    Here is what I did:
    - select 2-pass VBR then hit settings button
    - Max pass field (pull down field) has values "2 pass" and "2 pass (old type)"
    - choose the "2 pass"
