I recently aquired a widescreen LCD and set the aspect ratio on my Harman Kardon DVD27 for 16x9. The problem is, changing the aspect ratio on the player does nothing except when playing an 1.85:1 DVD. According to the manual, I should see "a boxed image in the center with black columns on the left and right side of the screen" when playing a 4:3 DVD. What I get is a stretched image just as if the DVD player were set for a 4:3 TV. This can of course be compensated for by setting the TV for 4:3, but I shouldn't have to do that. When playing a 2.35:1 DVD I also get the same signal out of the player regardless of the aspect ratio setting on the player. This is a little more difficult to compensate for by adjusting the television's aspect ratio. Changing the aspect ratio setting on the player affects the output only when playing a 1.85:1 DVD.
