  1. Hello all

I have an avi (divx) with VBR audio in it. I open up Vdub and cut out some scenes I don't want in order to also shrink the file size a bit. Now I want to just save it again without having to re-encode the entire thing taking ages, plus possibly losing more quality since it would be another re-encode process.

Can someone please explain to me how to do this, or point me to a newbie friendly link that does so?

    Thanks!

If you are using virtualdub then make sure you use the latest beta version. It supports smart encoding, so you can cut on non-key frames and only re-encode the (now) broken GOPs. If you use the older versions of Virtualdub then you can only cut on key frames without re-encoding.

  3. kk, I'll give that a shot, thanks. Do I need to set the Audio and video both to Full processing mode? Also, when I save, do I choose Save as Old Format AVI?

    Sorry for the newbie questions.

If you set it to Full processing Mode in any version you are forcing it to re-encode. You will have to play around with the new 1.7 beta to work out exactly how it works. There is probably a readme file to get you started.

  5. Since your audio is VBR, you should be using VDubMod. If cutting on keyframes, then just set the Video to Direct Stream Copy, the Audio is already DSC, make your cuts, and save it under a new name. Nothing gets reencoded. If you have to make cuts between keyframes, then you'll have to use one of the newer versions of VDub and mess around trying to master Smart Rendering.

Could also use avidemux. Supports VBR audio and Smart Copy (called something like that). Encodes the required frames at a fixed quant and just straight copies the rest.

I've been using celtic_druids' option of using avidemux lately and most VBR files are fixed but some have to be done the old fashioned way of saving an uncompressed wave and reinserting it back into the avi whether you're using VirtualdubMod, old Virtualdub or new Virtualdub.

Seems like a lot of people here are having problems with smart render in the new version of Virtualdub but I have been using it exclusively for months with no problems at all. With smart render and the curve editor, I've been making movies with all kinds of cuts and transitions without having to re-encode hardly any of the original Divx and Xvid files.
