I reformatted, Now Audio/Video is playing TOO FAST

I got this computer, it looks like a custom built PC. It had a lot of junk on it and it was very bogged down and slow, so I reformatted it and put Windows 2000 on it (instead of XP).

its 1ghz processor.

NOW, whenever I play any media files (mp3s, mpegs, EVEN youTube videos on www.youtube.com) they always play too fast. The audio and video are still in sync, but they're just playing too fast. Even the windows sound effects (like in windows explorer) are playing too fast.

What is this and how do I fix it?

Download and install updated drivers for all hardware ... esspecially for the motherboard .

Then grab and install service pack 4 for win 2000 from ms .

Reboot and see what it dose .

sounds like a dell computer. needs special sound driver available on their website.

I had to kinda hunt around to find the correct drivers so I'm not 100% sure I'm using the correct drivers. I used the DriverGuide Toolkit to help me out. How can I tell if I'm using the correct A/V drivers?

Also, how do I tell what motherboard I have so I can tell what driver I'd need for that?

Well , from those specs , its reasonably old , but them drivers are around ... maybe I have them ... 3000 cds collected over 15 years ... I ought to .

I wouldnt have gone to driver guide ... good for hard to find drivers ... but a mess ... and best guess most times .

Not all packages there are complete .

If your handy , shut the pc down , remove power cord , remove cover .

Some covers are retained by screws , some use a key , some desktops use funny pushin plastic buttons ... and mongrels use pop rivets ... pain in the ...

If desktop , remove top cover .

If midi tower . full tower , face back of pc , and remove panel on right side .

If it appears to have a fan in the panel , take it easy when removing panel ... some systems cases use two fans for cpu .

Once cover is either off , or supported to one side , you might need a light to see the manufacturers name , and model .

Just post all the big printed stuff you can see near the fan (fan / heatsink / cpu) in the middle of the large board (motherboard) , and it should be fine for reference , just make sure you take a good look so as not to miss anything .

Esspecially to the right of the fan in the middle of the board where memory chips are installed ... might need to gently lift cables out of way and to the side if their in the way .

http://www.cpuid.org/download/pcw2007_v173.exe is a program that might just do it all ... though it dose have some issues with reporting the actual model of motherboard installed ... it gets close .

Just report those details ... if there good enough , the drivers will be easy to locate for it .

I have seen that effect on audio from the wrong sound driver. It was the one Windows had installed. Digging around teh net to find the right one fixed that problem.

In general using the Windows drivers for things is a sure fire way of not getting all the performance.
