Project DogWaffle (yes, it's a silly name) will do animation.

There are a number of vector based animation programs, similar to flash. Google will find them for you

The gimp + gap (gimp animation package)

    Others :

    Blender
    Openfx

    Two most likely choices :

    Movies 13 : http://jansfreeware.com/ (under graphics)
    Beneton Movie GIF : http://software.benetonfilms.com/Beneton_Movie_GIF.php

My experience is a resounding "no" and that nothing animation-wise is easy. But I see new suggestions here, so I'll try these too! I wanted to make some custom animation logos for DVD intros, but largely gave up due to the learning curve and time required. Was not important enough to invest that much time/energy, at least not at this time.

I use a freeware 3d program called Anim8or. I find it to be a little easier to learn than Blender. However I'd like to thank Bjs for his contributions. I checked out the Beneton Movie GIF program and really like it. Thank you!

    Good and happy creativity .

There was a heap more available , but Im a blender / gimp man from way back , yet beneton movie gif dose seem to fill a particular spot considering the simplicity , over blender / gimp (gap) .

If you make it simple , they will come ... lol .

Yes , blender and the never ending sea of buttons is a real learning curve ... once you know what button dose what ... its up and onwards .

Ulead Cool 3-D Production. You can export as AVI but better yet if your editor supports import of sequential imagesas an overlay you can eport as TGA with with alpha channel.
