  1. intermittenly the keyboard or mouse (both built-in touchpad and USB) freezes coming out of these 2 power saving modes on my notebook. I have changed to the drivers that I have on my desktop unit, but same results.

History...I recently reformated and installed Win2K Sp4 as on my other system. other system works fine (and for years), but have this issue with the notebook. The notebook origianlly came with WinXP Home SP2, but again the HDD is reformatted. I've only installed a handful of apps, similar to my desktop.

Again the freeze-up happens more often than not, and it seems the keyboard is failing more often.

    Thanks, Noki

  2. You need to get the drivers from the manufacturer for the Touchpad and Keyboard. Or just avoid those two modes.

You might look in your BIOS settings also. Some motherboards have USB features such as 'Let this device bring the computer out of hibernation' or similar. I assume it has to keep some power supplied to the device to be able to do this. That's a little more difficult with a laptop as power saving is a big issue.

You could also try some different settings in 'Power Options' in the 'Control Panel'.

Windows can automatically turn power off to external and internal devices for energy savings. And it may not be restoring it properly when coming out of hibernation or standby.

  4. thanks all for responding.

    redwudz...
I will look into having either the KB or mouse bring the notebook back to life. currently they do NOT. I have to press the power button.

just that I never had the issue prior to reformatting the HDD. now it might take 4-5 reboots to get the (keyboard) to work.

    thanks for your insight.

  5. would anyone vote against me trying to repair Win2K from the Install CD as a solution for my issues??
I think my program links and drivers for my peripherals will stay intact. Is that right?

    thanks, Noki

Sometimes a repair/reinstall is the easiest way to clean everything up. You should backup all your data first..Just in case. Usually if I reformat, I also repartition first as notebooks often have a 'hidden' partition with recovery or diagnostic software on it. If you don't need that software, it might free up a little space.

I don't know if the W2000 OS disc allows you to see all partitions. If not, I boot with a W98 startup floppy disk and use fdisk to remove old partitions, then repartition. But don't format with it as it only does FAT32 formatting.

  8. if you actually choose repair it will leave your win2k install intact. It will just erase all the windows files and reinstall them.

Note that if it is a driver issue that issue will still be there. as it doesn't replace non microsoft installed drivers.

Or you could do what I myself would do, Upgrade all the drivers from the makers website. and if that didn't work I would shut it down and forget hibernate and suspend.

Leave the bios to manage power , and tell windows not to manage power .

The only thing I have windows on my laptop set to is when I close it , it powers off .

Intermitent issues can be directly caused by the laptops battery with a slight connection fault , unknown to the owner , it appears to be fine .

Shut it down , rip the battery out , rack it back in , and try again .

Mine dose wake from keyboard / mouse , but thats controlled at the bios level , not os .

    ----

Dose your laptops hard drive sound as though its parking the heads alot

If so , its normally the laptops power adapter causing the issue , replace it asap .

  10. thanks for the new replies.

HP (Compaq) does not have a keyboard/mouse driver per say for my model on their support (drivers) website. They just have something called a Quick Button patch/addon.

My HDD sounds fine. I will look into the BIOS and see if I can find the power managemnet section there.

    thanks again. noki

thanks. But when the mouse driver goes south it affects both my internal touchpad AND USB mouse.

but the mouse has been okay for the past 2 weeks. the keyboard is the only one that is affected now.

I assume you're removed both the keyboard and mouse from the listings in DEVICE MANAGER and allowed them to both reinstall after a reboot...correct?

    Yes,
but this time I also changed a property of the keyboard; I actived it to wake up the system from standby. maybe that way the driver will "sleep" properly.

    thanks.
