Tool to extract datecode from DV datastream?

Can someone point me to code or a description of the file format so that I can extract the datecode from a DV file so that I can create subtitles from it.

On the Mac, data from a DV camcorder creates a .dv file. On Windows I can get an AVI file and use dv_datecode or dv_submaker but I haven't found an equivalent tool on Mac.

Any pointers appreciated. I'm a programmer and could spend some time (but not too much) looking into this. But I haven't found any simple description of the file formats.

Thanks, I already knew about that one, I listed it in my question. It can read from an AVI file, but not from a .dv file. On a Mac, all capture tools seem to create .dv files only.

I was going to suggest changing the extension from .DV to . AVI, but it was a total guess so I thought I'd better check first. I found this:

I've no experience of .dv and video on Macs, so can't really help further other than suggesting a search in the Mac forum (if you haven't done so already).
