Capture in Sony Vegas

Hey guys i'm new here, comming with a question. I think i put it in the wrong section before, but here is the right one

anyway here is the question:

I am trying to capture video from a TV. When i plug in my recording device and the plugs, it shows as "preview is turned off" and it won't work. For some reason it will not show up on Sony Vegas.
when i try it on studio 10 quickstart, it will record. but i want to use Sony Vegas to record on. why isn't it working?

p.s. i'm using this version of vegas: http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/Products/...uct.asp?PID=977

when i go to the capture image place, it shows what i want to record. but it comes up with this incorrect STI error message. and when i try to exit out of the capture window it breaks down my comp, forcing me to reboot.
