  1. Friends got a pc thats only about 6 months old, and already theres a problem with the DVD burner. For some reason it will burn cds fine, but it will not burn DVDs. Use Nero and it gets to 1% and thats it. Strange that it burns cds but not DVDs anymore.

  3. There are two lasers in a DVD writer and it sounds like the DVD laser is fried.
But before buying a new one I would update the firmware and try another batch of DVD's to rule out bad media.

    Don't upgrade the firmware.
You might try another media to make sure it's not bad media but the first Lite-on that I bought from PC Club did just the opposite of yours. The DVD burner worked fine but the CD side stopped working. Come to find out, it was common on the early Lite-ons and I could've just exchanged it at PC Club but since I did the firmware upgrade, it voided the warranty and I couldn't exchange it at the factory or at PC Club which both had a 1 year warranty.

I take it you upgraded the drive with hacked firmware which is why you couldn't exchange the drive at the factory or at PC Club. As long as you upgrade with the manufacturers firmware you're allowed to return the drive.

  6. Its not the media, I have tried several different types. I will have to look at the exact make, all I know is its a HP. Guess I will try a differnt burning software, before updating the firmware.

    capman21,

If you have a burn log from a failed burn that you could post, that would be the quickest and most reliable way to diagnose the problem.

I was referred from this site to I believe CDfreaks and the link I followed said it was an official Lite-on firmware download.

If I would've known that the dying CD laser was common for that model then I would've exchanged it before upgrading the firmware but I didn't find that out for another month or two and I had already bought another combo drive or two. The replacements were cheap but the original drive that died I got on sale for about $120.

It's weird that you downloaded official liteon firmware then you couldn't return the defective drive. Usually if the drive is a known defect the manufacturer will replace as long as it's within the warranty period. That's why I like buying dvd burners from Newegg because if the drive fails within a year they'll replace it or refund you. As long as it's not flashed with hacked firmware Newegg will allow the replacement. Your drive was only a few months old when the cd laser died how shitty that LITEON wouldn't replace it.

This is happening so often there outta be a sticky on it....

First, if its under warranty, go that route; reason being that the replacement unit will have a whole new warranty (and people have been known to blow fw updates).

Sometimes forgotten is that video captures can look like a hugely fragmented hard drive; before changing anything you might try deleting temp files & defragging.

Was the burning software changed in any way just before this happened? Is there more than one burner in the machine? Were there any other hardware changes ? You can look in System Restore too- they will be logged there automatically, & you may be able to even reverse a recent change.

    Good Luck!

I think budz is correct that drive should be returnable if updated with official firmware from the manufacturer. However, another option is to flash back to original firmware if it can be located, or you could back it up before updating. Firmware updates can make some surprising differences as demonstrated by a LiteOn SHM-165P6S I got 2 weeks ago. The original firmware results were over 50% coasters with Verbatim 8x -R and Playo 16x +R, and update to latest MSOR firmware for that drive resulted in burning Verbatims fine but still coasters with Playos. Finally flashing back to the previously latest MSOP firmware burns fine with all media tried.

  13. 1.Make sure DMA is enabled on all drives, use Nero InfoTool to check.
    2.Uninstall Nero InCD(if installed).
3.Go to My Computer and right-click on your DVD writer then select Properties->Recording and disable.
4.Use another burn program such as ImgBurn.

BTW:what version of Nero are you using?
