    Hi,
I'm using Direct Show Dump Utility and DVD Patcher to make mpg from tivo. I open DVD Author 2.0 to clip the mpg and now it freezes. When I close it says "Invalid Sample" Has anyone run into this?

It worked like twice, but now no dice.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Try opening the file with gspot to see the file specs and post a screenshot here.

Something else i noticed. I can use dvdpatcher to change the 480x480 to 480x720 and it works - except half the screen in dvd author is green. But when I turn in to 480x352 it doesn't. I've reinstalled both direct show dump and dvd patcher. the Mpgs play in media player

When you import the files into your authoring prog you have to patch it back to the original size. If you patch to 720 you will get the green part of the screen, patching to 352 lowers the resolution that's why the green bars don't show. Make sure you patch the entire file.

This is how I author non DVD compliant files with TDA 1.6:

    - Patch the MPEG recordings with DVDPatcher to a valid DVD resolution (352x480 for example)
    - Open the file in TMPG DVD Author, but don't do anything yet! (the picture can look distorted)
    - Now immediately patch the MPEG file back with the original size values.
    - Continue Authoring with TMPG DVD author, everything should then work fine.

This works for me with the DVD Author 1.6, but when I tried is once doing the same with TDA 2.0 the authoring process took extremely long.
I think TDA 2.0 was reencoding the whole file at that time.

My process is very similar and have yet to have any problems at all.
I use DVDReDo to change from TIVO to MPG. I then use TMPGENC Express 3. to edit commercials, etc. then set my desired settings (DVD compliant ones) and let it go.
I then feed that MPG file into TDA 1.6 and the rest is history.

So far all works as advertised without any problems.

I just wish TMPGENC Express was a bit faster but it works quite well.

    Thanks for all the tips.
I can't try and patch a file once it's in TDA. won't let me. If I patch to 720x480, do the editing and then patch back to 480x480 before I author, will that work (ie no green bars?)

The instructions for the tivo to mpg conversion explicitly say to patch only the first header. Why? What does this buy me? Should I patch the enitre file?

    Thanks.

Also, I found that it looks like it doesn't like two particular tivo files. I can't see any difference, but maybe Direct Show Dump doesn't like them for some reason.

Ignore my previous advice about patching the entire file, I was wrong

  10. ugh.....can anyone link me to a solid tutorial on all this?

i've been trying this for months and still no great luck

last attempt i used directshowdump to free the mpg and then simply put that into nero vision

it worked ok but the video was kind of "shaky" whenever there was any movement on the screen.

a scene where the images didn't move much though looked perfect?

Have you tried the VideoReDo process? It converts TIVO files directly into MPG without any fuss or muss.
Once into MPG format TIVO as you know is in 480x480. Tmpgenc will convert that to 720x480 and convert the audio to 48K.

    Give it a whirl.

Part of the "shaky ness" could be the result of your recording quality. Low recording quality can cause this issue.
