  1. I have a Sony Bravia HDTV with a CI slot for receiving Pay TV terrestrial television. I just bought a Pioneer DVR which also has a CI slot. I have asked the Pay TV smart card provider where they think I am best off putting the card; in the HDTV or the DVR, but I keep getting different answers from them.

    What do you guys think?

If it has to be one, the DVR can't record without it. If you can get a second card (seems fair to me), you can watch something else at the TV.

A CI slot is not enough to use your HDTV card, you also need a
CA Module specific for the type of encryption/decryption used by the provider.

  4. I do have CAM for both appliances, and the DVR has a built in tuner.

So did I understand you right, should I choose to put the card in the DVR?

The DVR can feed the TV. Can the TV feed the DVR? It depends on the TV hardware capability and how you want to use it.

  6. Yes, the TV can feed the DVR (when the smart card is in the TV CAM).

So now, does that make a difference in the choice of where to put the smart card?

Try it both ways and see which works for you.

Seems to me the DVR needs to tune the channels if you want unattended recording.
